In a subdivision rampant with traditional homes of coarse stucco walls and multiple-hipped, clay-tile roofs, an easement off the last cul-de-sac leads to the Valburn West House. Minimal impervious cover allowances and the possibility of astonishing views from the second level led to designing the primary living rooms upstairs. The visitor enters through a lush garden that tempers the ubiquitous environs, and provides a sense of relief and a moment of calm before ascending. Inside, one arises to an intense interior environment and unexpected expanse toward the Texas Hill Country. Behind, an aluminum trellis screen and quartered walnut millwork shields the neighboring houses while providing carefully framed views in their direction.
